On April 17th, NASA Astronaut Dr. Donald Thomas visited St. Marks Church in Long Valley to meet scouts from troops 236, 336, packs 62,136, their families and siblings.
Scouting and NASA have a long history. More than two-thirds of all current and former astronauts have been involved in scouting. Of the 312 pilots and scientists selected as astronauts since 1959, at least 234 have been scouts. During the evening, Dr. Thomas who was a scout himself, shared his lifelong journey to become an astronaut, what it was like living and working in space, and shared some of his favorite views of planet Earth taken from space.
After Dr. Thomas’s presentation “Overcoming Obstacles and Reaching for the Stars!”, he answered several questions from the scouts and gave them all an opportunity to meet with him and snap a picture or two. Truly an “Evening with an Astronaut” that they will always remember that will hopefully inspire them to work hard and follow their dreams.
