Township Committees In Need Of Volunteers, Long Valley Officials Say

LONG VALLEY, NJ — Washington Township is looking for residents who are passionate about giving back to their community.

There are approximately 15 volunteer boards and committees in Washington Township that do important work such as making land use recommendations, establishing all necessary rules and regulations for the protection of the Township's residents health, and much more.

"Please consider volunteering your time to improve your community! Most groups hold a short meeting one evening a month," township officials said.

There are currently positions available on the following boards, committees, or commissions: Board of Health, Economic Development, Environmental, Historic Preservation, Recreation, and Shade Tree.

The Board of Health:

The Board of Health enforces all Township ordinances relating to public health or nuisances, septic systems, radon, lead paint, and so on, and makes all necessary rules and regulations for the protection of the Township's residents' health.

They support numerous healthcare initiatives, such as Covid-19 and flu vaccination clinics, blood pressure clinics, cancer screenings, and child health clinics. The Board of Health meets every other month on a Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m.

Economic Development Committee:

The mission of the Washington Township Economic Development Committee is to attract and support businesses that are compatible with the Township's character into industrial, commercial, and office/research zoned properties within the Township in order to build ratable in these categories and thus reduce the tax burden on Township residents.

The group meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

Environmental Commission:

The Washington Township Environmental Commission is a volunteer advisory board to the Municipal Government of Washington Township that makes recommendations on land use, natural resource protection, and other environmental issues confronting the community.

Meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building.

Historic Preservation Commission:

The Washington Township Historic Preservation Commission is in charge of overseeing changes to existing properties as well as new construction within three historic districts and several individual sites.

The commission also serves as an advisor to any homeowner who owns a historic property in the township. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m., and work sessions are held on the first Monday of every other month. Training is also available through state conferences.

Recreation Committee:

The recreation committee is dedicated to providing a diverse range of programs, leisure activities, and facilities to the residents of Washington Township. They work hard to provide all parks and recreational services that the ever-expanding and ever-changing community require and desires for the present and future. The meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. on the first Monday of each month.

Shade Tree Committee:

The Shade Tree Committee's role is to provide advice to the Planning Board. The Committee's responsibilities include reviewing plats of proposed development projects, recommending shade trees for planting, and replacing dead trees along township streets. It meets every month on the second Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
