The rankings were based on communities in the Garden State with at least 10,000 people in 2013 and crime data reported to the FBI, known as the Uniform Crime Report. Safewise compared the number of reported violent crimes and property crimes in each city, and based each on a per-1,000 person ratio to make the ratios even across small and large towns.

In the rankings, Safewise.com said:

“Nominal crime is often the result of a tightly-knit community where neighbors look out for one another. Such is the case with Washington Township. The township has a number of civic organizations that include an active Historic Preservation Commission and Women’s Club. We were impressed to see that Washington Township reported just two violent crimes, and reduced burglaries by two thirds since our last report.”
