Young Runners Are 'Formidable' Opponents in 2013
Cross country team proves strength, placing in each age group at meets throughout season.

The Long Valley Cross Country team wrapped up its 5th on October 27 on a high note. The 2013 squad, consisting of 63 athletes ages 7-15 proved to be a formidable opponent to other area runners.
Starting in September, these trail blazers met 2-3 times weekly to condition and practice at Palmer Park under the tutelage of head coach Kevin Daly and Assistant coaches Terri St. Jacques, Camma Meyers, and Martine Gough, (7-8 year old boys and girls); Jill Muniz and Mary Hanifin (9-11 year old boys and girls); and Victor Vuskalns (12 and older boys and girls), led these student athletes to become one of the strongest running clubs in the area.
On a weekly basis the Long Valley team placed in each age group and set personal records for each athlete.
Athletes met weekly at Central Park of Morris County (formerly Greystone) to compete against 800 athletes from 18 area teams. Older athletes ages 13-15 started race days with a 4K over hilly terrain. The 11-12 year old group followed with a 3K. The 9-10 year olds traversed a slightly abbreviated course of 2K with the youngest set of athletes, 7-8, competing in a 1.7K race.
This year's 7-8 year old boys team of David Brown, Connor Daly, Kurt DeChiaro, Mason Gough, Brendan Halstead, Sean Krentz, Jack Kresser, Joey LaPella, Owen Mermirs, Christopher Sameras and Cade Zeolla won the league meet in their age group.
Post season racing at state and regional levels continues throughout November with national meets being run in December. Long Valley expects to have several athletes competing at all levels and looks forward to the return of these athletes for the 2014 spring Track and Field season.
