Madison Named One Of NJ's Safest Towns For 2020

Madison made the list as one of 50 safest towns in New Jersey, the report said.

MADISON, NJ — Madison has been named the 32nd safest city in New Jersey in a new study done by Safewise.

Madison, which boasts a population of 15,832 with a median income of $109,737 earned top marks with a 0.2 violent crime rate and a 4.8 property crime rate. Safewise uses a metric of rate per thousand.

New Jersey is home to many safe cities, often dominating the Safewise national rankings. In 2019, New Jersey had 30 cities land on the 100 Safest Cities in America list, and 18 cities made the 2019 ranking of the 100 Safest Small Towns in America.

Safewise notes that the Garden State’s crime rates are consistently below national averages. Year over year, the state’s violent crime rate dropped from 2.3 incidents per 1,000 to 2.1. Likewise, New Jersey’s property crime rate fell from 15.8 to 14.0. Both rates are below the nationwide rates of 3.7 for violent crime and 22.0 for property crime.

Personal experience with both violent and property crime rose between 2019 and 2020, New Jersey reports are still under national averages, officials said. Just 6 percent of New Jersey respondents reported a personal experience with violent crime in the past 12 months. The national average is 12 percent. New Jersey residents reported 15 percent had experienced property crime compared to 26 percent nationally, the report said.
