Ellen Dolgin, Associate Professor and Chair of English at Dominican College and Adjunct Professor at Ramapo College will discuss George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion. The play, written in 1912 but not performed on the English stage until 1914, is perhaps George Barnard Shaw’s most enduring play as it was turned into the Broadway musical My Fair Lady and later the movie. The characters, situations, and dialogue Bernard Shaw supplies are rich, ebullient, and unmatched in wit as the infamous Henry Higgins prepared to “make a duchess of this draggletailed guttersnipe.” Thus begins this classic tale as Shaw pokes fun at smugness and priggish conventionality.
Ellen Dolgin is Associate Professor and Chair of English at Dominican College and a leading scholar on George Bernard Shaw. The public is invited to join in on the discussion. You are encouraged to read Pygmalion before attending the program. Call or visit the library to find out how to arrange for a copy of the book. This program is free. No tickets are necessary.
