A Mahwah police officer’s quick actions and use of a tourniquet helped keep a teenage accident victim from bleeding to death after he was struck by a pickup while crossing Route 17 Sunday, The Record reported.

Officer Matt Lombardo wrapped the tourniquet around Jason Criscuolo’s left leg as he lay on Route 17 South until a medical helicopter arrived, Chief James Batelli told the publication.

Criscuolo was struck shortly before 8 p.m. and was flown to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson via helicopter where he leg was amputated below the knee, authorities said.
