Mahwah Officials Promise Cooperation, Unity This Year

MAHWAH, N.J. — Local officials promised to work together, rather than against one another, this year after they were sworn into their respective offices at the Town Council's reorganization meeting Thursday.

New Council President Robert Hermansen said he, Mayor William Laforet, and others met recently to discuss important issues and where they all stand on them.

The previous two years of Laforet's term were marked with controversy and infighting between him and the council. Laforet ran the township like a business, something council members did not necessarily agree with. There was also a scandal involving the former head of the Department of Public Works. Others say he failed to protect the township's real estate assets and disregarding township policies.

A group of residents launched a recall campaign against Laforet, but withdrew it before a special election could be held.

"Ninety-five percent of the things we do agree on," Hermansen said. "We have to learn how to disagree in a better manner. I promise you, I will do everything in my power to sure we work together for the people of this town."

Laforet agreed.

"I think we're at a special place and a new beginning," Laforet said to the packed council chamber. "I am honored to be your mayor."

Councilmembers Steven Sabarra and James Wysocki were also sworn into new terms.

David May was appointed to fill Jonathan Marcus' seat. Marcus was elected to the council, but declined a few weeks after the election, citing personal reasons.

Councilman Jonathan Wong was elected council vice president. Wong and former Councilman John Roth ran against Laforet in this year's mayoral election.
