NJ Man Charged In Mom’s Fire Poker Slaying: Prosecutor

A Bergen County man has been charged in the fire poker slaying death of his mother at a NJ home on Saturday, authorities said.

DUMONT, NJ - A Bergen County man has been charged in the fire poker slaying death of his mother in her Dumont home on Saturday, authorities said.

Patrick Maupai, 40, was charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement on Sunday.

Shortly before midnight on July 23, Dumont police responded to a 911 call from a male stating that he had attacked his mother with a fire poker. The man, later identified as Maupai, was immediately taken into police custody.

Maupai’s mother, who was not identified in a news release, was found on the floor of the living room with multiple lacerations on her face and covered in blood, police said.

Maupai is lodged at Bergen County Jail in Hackensack pending an appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court.
