A raccoon jumped on Aryan Gavali‘s back as he was walking to school with his mother in Elmwood Park. The animal bit and scratched Gavali’s face.

Danny Wallis heard Gavali’s mother screaming and ran over. He bit the raccoon with a painter’s pole until it let go and then beat it to death, Elmwood Park police said.

It is the first confirmed case of rabies in Bergen County this year, said county spokesman Michael Pagan.
