Playbill Condemns Trademark Use In Scott Garrett Attack Ad

House Majority PAC is responsible for the content of the advertisement.

Playbill Inc. has filed a cease and desist letter with and a legal complaint against a political action committee regarding the use of the Playbill trademark in a political attack ad against Rep. Scott Garrett.

The ad, which is paid for by the House Majority PAC, attacks Garrett, a republican, although no political party is mentioned in it.

The ad shows a picture of Garrett on the cover of a Playbill program and includes the trademarked logo of Playbill Inc. It refers to Garrett as "the lonely man," disparages his voting record.

Playbill Inc. CEO and President Philip S. Birsh said the company is "disgusted" and "furious" at the logo's use.

"We won't stand for the irresponsible use of the Playbill brand in any way, shape, or form," Birsh said in a statement.

Garrett, a seven-term congressman, is locked in a heated battle with Wyckoff democrat Josh Gottheimer, a former speechwriter for President Bill Clinton, to represent the 5th Congressional District.

The PAC had a plane with a banner blasting Garrett's alleged anti-gay stance fly over the Jersey Shore this summer.

The PAC paid for an ad spot that labeled Garrett an "extremist."
