There’s No Place like Home
Many of you have seen my recent photos from my first trip to Yankee Stadium this year. As a caption I wrote the word “home” referring to the feeling of relaxation and accomplishment I made it back to a place that makes me feel at home. Fresh air, green grass, and the Bronx Bombers staging yet another late game comeback and all is right with the world if only for a couple of hours.
As I sat in the crowd anticipating the first pitch my mind wandered back to the first time Dad took me and my brother Keith to the real Yankee Stadium across the street. It was in the mid-60s, it was Bat Day against the Minnesota Twins and a crowd of about 65,000 were there with us. The old ballpark has now been reduced to a soccer field across the street for the current ballpark. The old place was home for me many times as me and my buddy Rich would venture across the river to see our heroes play. Rich’s Dad would drive us to the Stadium drop us off just outside the park at 11 am on a Sunday morning and meet us there at 7 pm after a doubleheader. For 5-10 bucks Rich and I saw 2 games bought scorecards and even had something to eat. At the newer ballpark, I could have drunk a six pack of beer out of one glass for a measly 11 bucks. Ohhh that was for one beer? Definitely no place like home.

As time goes by being home means different things to different people, like coming home to America after serving in our armed services, or maybe coming home after surgery. To me coming home has always meant being where ever my mother is---that is truly home for me. Even at earths palaces such as Hawaii and Cancun, there’s no place quite as comfortable as home for all of us.
For those less fortunate than me, home can also be in memories stored in our minds. Good times like good wine seem to get better with age and as I think back and remember I remember people---that’s what really matters. Over the past week I have been privileged to revisit some of my history with Mark, Don, and Carol and the one thing that was consistent with all of us was something missing today---compassion , and respect
