The fire that took the lives of a Belmar father, son and the family dog does not appear to be suspicious so far, a spokesman for the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office said.

Family members, as quoted by News12, identified the victims as 86-year-old Bill Oberschewen and his adult son, Mark.

Neighbors told the station that Mark Oberschewen was engaged to be married and had two children from a previous relationship. Some speculated that the fire was started by a cigarette, noting that Mark was trying to quit smoking.

Belmar police received multiple 911 calls about a fully-engulfed structure fire at a home on 14th Avenue around 9:38 p.m. on Monday evening, said spokesman Charles Webster.

The two male victims were found deceased inside the house.

"The cause and manner of their deaths and their respective identities will be determined at autopsies slated for today," Webster said.

Fire departments from Belmar, Avon, Spring Lake, Wall and Neptune all responded to the blaze, Doherty said.

The names of the deceased were not immediately available. An investigation is ongoing. The house was a year-round rental.

We'll have more information as it becomes available.
