It still doesn't make any sense, friends and family of Carly Friedman say. Why would anybody hit her with a car, leave the scene and disappear?

Carly's case isn't alone, however, Police in New Jersey have been feverishly looking for several suspects in three mysterious crimes this month that have left at least two victims seriously injured and another person dead.

Friedman, a soccer and basketball star at Westfield High School before graduating from Rutgers University, was run over by a car in Belmar. Then the car backed up and ran over her again, according to friends who are raising money for her recovery.

A GoFundMe page was set up by her friend Kathleen Bond. More than $60,000 was raised by Friday.

"It is almost unbelievable that someone would do this," said Mike Canavan, a family friend. "My daughter knows her from both Westfield and Rutgers and she is not expected to be paralyzed."
