Sea Girt Council President Niemeyer Retiring From Public Service at Year’s End

Longtime official, pleased with his 'joyous' council experience, hopes others will seek office

After more than 15 years of regularly attending night meetings, Borough Council President Fred Niemeyer is calling it a day.

Niemeyer casually announced that he will not seek re-election to the Borough Council this fall while presenting his report during the governing body’s March 14 meeting. His current term expires Dec. 31.

“I will pursue other interests, thereby creating a vacancy, which will enable someone else the privilege to experience the joyous life of a councilperson of Sea Girt Borough,” Niemeyer read from a brief prepared statement that elicited chuckles from his colleagues. Handshakes and well wishes followed.

Niemeyer’s tenure includes two years on the borough’s planning board from 1996 to 1998. He is now in his 13th year on the council and is presently the liaison to the fire department.

Mayor Mark Clemmensen thanked Niemeyer for championing various road projects in town throughout the years. Through Niemeyer’s efforts and persistence, Sea Girt received money from both the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and the federal Community Block Development Grant program (CBDG) to complete roadway improvements and to construct sidewalks along state Highway 71.

Meanwhile, Niemeyer remarked that he hopes to see a new face on next year’s council.

“It’s time for a change,” he said.
