Warrior Recap: Hockey, Girls Basketball Start Fast

A weekly roundup of Manasquan High School sports

Behind sophomore standout Connor Grogan, Manasquan has come out flying in the 2011-2012 ice hockey season. Sitting at 4-2, with losses only to Old Bridge and St. Rose, the Warriors are sitting nicely in the lead in the Shore Conference C division.

Most notably, the Warriors defeated Marlboro, 12-2, a season after the Mustangs led the state in wins. Manasquan also has beaten Jackson Liberty, 6-2, Red Bank Regional, 4-2, and Hopewell Valley, 3-0.

In boys basketball, the Warriors opened the season with an impressive 63-53 win over Moorestown. Norman Hobbie led Manasquan with 20 points and Jimmy Walsh had a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. The Warriors topped Brick, 56-45, led by 26 points from Hobbie and another double-double by Walsh, 13 points and 12 rebounds. Manasquan suffered its first loss Tuesday night, a 71-58 defeat by Lakewood. Walsh had 20 points and 17 rebounds and Hobbie had 25 points.

In girls basketball, the Lady Warriors beat Barnegat, 65-22, in the first round of the WOBM Christmas Classic. Top-seeded Manasquan was led by Michaela Mabrey, who scored 22 points. Sam Sullivan and Eva Hart each added 10 points. Before the tournament, Manasquan beat Brick, 58-14, to open the 2011-2012 campaign. The Warriors also topped Lakewood, 65-13, behind 10 points from Mabrey and 17 by Katelynn Flaherty.

In wrestling, Manasquan notched its first victory of the season, defeating Lakewood last week, after back-to-back losses to Red Bank and Barnegat. Harry Warner, at 220, is 3-0 for the Warriors, with pins in two of the three bouts.
