Driver Injured As Sand-Laden Dump Truck Overturns In Manchester

The cleanup of 24 tons of sand and the crash investigation closed the road for several hours, police said.

MANCHESTER, NJ — A dump truck driver was taken to a hospital after his truck loaded with sand overturned on Pasadena Road on Wednesday, police said.

Erick Castro-Perez, 50, was injured in the crash that happened shortly after 8 a.m. near the Burlington County-Ocean County border, Manchester Capt. Vincent Manco said. He was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River, and his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, Manco said.

The crash investigation found Castro-Perez was driving a 2020 Volvo VNL dump truck loaded with 24 tons of sand north on Pasadena Road when the passenger side tires went onto the dirt shoulder, then back onto the road, and the truck crossed the center line into the southbound lane and overturned onto the driver's side, Manco said.

The 24 tons of sand then spilled onto the road and the shoulder, he said. The road was closed for several hours during the investigation and cleanup.

EMTs and firefighters from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Services and the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department responded, and the Ocean County Road Department assisted with the cleanup.

The crash investigation is continuing, Manco said, but driver error appears to be the primary contributing factor.

Patrolman Michael O’Hara is investigating.
