The Midiri Brothers show that was scheduled for January 11th has been canceled and rescheduled for January 25.
MidWeek Jazz has, in recent years, celebrated the anniversary of Benny Goodman’s famous Carnegie Hall concert, an evening that legitimized jazz and swing music. They’ll continue this tradition this year, with the popular Midiri Brothers honoring the King of Swing for a downstate audience. Clarinetist Joe Midiri has been compared to Goodman by reviewers, and brother Paul Midiri is an ace on the vibes in the best Lionel Hampton manner. Also on the roster are band leaders Ed Wise (bass) and Brooks Tegler (drums), plus Pat Mercuri (guitar) and Dean Schneider(piano). If you are fussy about your reserved seats, it is time to order them.
“Benny Goodman Fans! You’ve got to hear this to believe it,” exclaimed a reviewer about the Midiri Brothers first CD. “Clarinetist Joe Midiri really does sound like the great Goodman.” He’s not alone in heaping praise on the acclaimed master clarinetist. “Joe Midiri,” writes another reviewer, “is probably the spiritual descendent of Benny Goodman. Yes, he’s that good!” Others have similar praise, often for the way the entire band captures the dynamics that made the Goodman small groups so exciting to hear.
