LAKEHURST, NJ — Fire companies from Manchester Township and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst will be providing fire coverage in Lakehurst after the borough's fire company shut down on Wednesday, according to a report.

The fire company shut down after its chief and deputy chief resigned, the Asbury Park Press reported. The reasons for their resignations was not known, the report said.

The shutdown is temporary, Lakehurst Mayor Harry Robbins said in an alert to borough residents shared by Tri-County Scanner News. That site said the shutdown happened as of 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Robbins said the shutdown was due to issues with firefighter retention.

"Public safety remains our highest priority," Robbins said. "The Borough is actively working toward a solution to restore and maintain reliable fire protection services, in coordination and collaboration with our neighboring communities."
