MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Last week, a bicycle was stolen outside of Columbia High School in Maplewood, just one recent example of why local cyclists should remember to keep their bikes locked, police say.

The Aug. 9 incident is one of several recent bicycle thefts reported in the township, Maplewood police announced in a Wednesday advisory.

“During the past several weeks, Maplewood police have received a number of reports from residents regarding the theft of unsecured bicycles,” authorities stated. “Residents are reminded to keep their bicycles secured and out of public view when not in use.”

Maplewood police stated that bike owners should also keep their garage doors locked and use bicycle locks (specifically a “hardened, U-shape locking device).

“Please keep a record of your serial number on your bicycle,” police said. “While the MPD is working actively to recover bikes and identify suspects, we rely on the public’s help in keeping personal property secure.”
