Burglar Steals Cash Register from Main Library

The following information was provided by the Maplewood Police Department.

A cash register from the main branch of Maplewood Memorial Library was stolen last night.

At about 9  p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, Maplewood Police Department officers responded to the Maplewood Library at 51 Baker Street on an alarm activation. The library was closed at the time, and no employees were on the premises.

The first officer on the scene observed a man leaving the area of the rear of the library holding a cash register. Upon observing the officer the suspect discarded the cash register and fled into Memorial Park.

Officers gave chase on foot but were unable to locate the suspect. The South Orange Police and the Essex County Sheriff’s K-9 unit responded to the scene to assist Maplewood officers in conducting an extensive search of the area; however the suspect was not apprehended. T

he suspect is described only as a male wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and blue pants. An investigation by Maplewood Detectives is underway. Anyone with any information regarding the incident should contact the Maplewood Police Department at 973-762-3400.
