From 12 Meals to 2 Million: Franciscan Charities Launches First 5K Run &amp; Walk
September 12th event at South Mountain Recreation Complex – Franciscan Charities invites the community to run, walk, volunteer and support Newark neighbors in need
Franciscan Charities, a Newark nonprofit that has grown from serving 12 meals on its first day to providing 2 million hot meals for more than two decades, will host its first 5K Run &amp; Walk on Saturday, September 12, from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the South Mountain Recreation Complex in West Orange.
The event will bring runners, walkers, volunteers and supporters together from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Participants can register online at <a href="https://franciscancharitiesinc.org/ways-to-give/5km-walk-run" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://franciscancharitiesinc.org/ways-to-give/5km-walk-run</a> or on event day at the Clipper Pavilion beginning at 8:00 a.m.
Franciscan Charities began more than 20 years ago as a small soup kitchen in the basement of St. Ann's Church in Newark. Since then, the organization has served 2 million hot meals, including approximately 140,000 meals last year.
Beyond meals, Franciscan Charities provides diapers and formula to families, school supplies and uniforms to children, winter coats, and holiday gifts. The organization's work during the COVID-19 pandemic was recognized nationally by the Obama Foundation, which featured Franciscan Charities as a "Story of Hope" and described the organization as "small but mighty." The City of Newark has also recognized Franciscan Charities as a "beacon of hope and inspiration."

His additional credits as a recording artist include opening for Diana Ross at the Hollywood Bowl, performing alongside Common at The Kennedy Center, and releasing his debut album, GROW.
On screen, Henry played Gaston in ABC’s Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration and starred as Roger Bart in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Academy Award-nominated film tick, tick… BOOM! opposite Andrew Garfield. He also appeared in Steven Knight’s Apple TV+ drama See and starred in the action film American Renegades opposite J.K. Simmons and Sullivan Stapleton.
On Broadway, Henry starred in the Grammy-winning revival of Into the Woods alongside Phillipa Soo and appeared as Dr. Pomatter in Waitress. He earned Tony Award nominations for his performances as Billy Bigelow in Carousel, Flick in Violet opposite Sutton Foster, and Haywood Patterson in Susan Stroman’s The Scottsboro Boys. He also portrayed Aaron Burr in Hamilton in Chicago and on the first U.S. tour, and starred as Noble Sissle in George C. Wolfe’s Tony-nominated Shuffle Along opposite Audra McDonald. An Essex County home inspector has built a free website that lets anyone look up the public records behind a New Jersey property &mdash; building permits, flood zones, fire history, property taxes, and more &mdash; by typing in an address.
The site, Permit &amp; Parcel (oprasearch.app), covers all 564 New Jersey municipalities and pulls only from official sources: state and county databases, FEMA flood maps, and the towns' own municipal codes. There's no account, no email capture, and no cost.
"I kept watching buyers fall in love with a house before anyone checked the paper trail &mdash; the open permits, the flood zone, what the town actually requires when a home changes hands," said Leo Betancor, a Certified Master Inspector based in Cedar Grove and the founder of the site. "All of that is public record. It just wasn't in one place anyone could actually use."
Alongside the main lookup, the site includes free single-purpose tools: a lead-safe inspection lookup showing which of the two state-required inspection methods each town uses under New Jersey's lead paint law, a searchable directory of every DCA-certified lead evaluation and abatement contractor sorted by distance, a fire-incident map built from more than 40 years of state fire records, and a radon map covering every municipality.
A companion site, njflood.zone, gives instant FEMA flood-zone answers for any New Jersey address &mdash; built after the federal government shutdown left FEMA's own map site unreliable &mdash; running on the site's own servers with the complete flood map data for the state loaded locally.
The project was recently featured in <a href="https://www.tapinto.net/towns/east-hanover-slash-florham-park/columns/at-home-with-holly/articles/deep-dive-conversations-what-the-house-won-t-tell-you" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">TAPinto</a>'s "At Home with Holly" column.
