Fire at Vacant Irvington Avenue Home Under Investigation
No one was injured in the blaze. HazMat from Nutley responded due to fuel leak.
The Maplewood Fire Department and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office are currently investigating a fire that occurred at a vacant home on Irvington Avenue in Maplewood on Christmas night.
Firefighters responded to reports of a house fire at 554 Irvington Ave. shortly after 7 p.m.

According to Maplewood Fire Department officials, crews were met with heavy smoke and fire showing in the rear of the structure and extending to the second floor upon arrival. The Newark Fire Department was on the scene, due to several 9-1-1 calls from neighbors on the Newark side of Irvington Avenue. An engine company from South Orange was also requested to respond, due to a simultaneous ambulance call in Maplewood.
Newark units assisted Maplewood in extinguishing the blaze, which was under the command of Maplewood Acting Deputy Chief Michael DeMartini. According to the Maplewood Fire Departement, it was unclear whether the home was occupied, so crews did a full search of the structure. It was determined to be vacant.

The fire was declared under control in about 40 minutes.
Maplewood Fire Chief Joseph Richardella also responded to the scene.
Nutley Fire Department HazMat was also called to the scene due to a leaking oil tank in the basement. The fire is currently under investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office and the Maplewood Fire Department.
No injuries were reported.
