Police Give Update On Maplewood School Lockdown Tuesday

A lockdown was lifted at a school in Maplewood after an incident with an "irate parent," police said.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Police provided more details Tuesday afternoon after an elementary school in Maplewood was placed on lockdown due to an incident with an "irate parent."

The police sent an alert to the public at 9:25 a.m. on Tuesday morning saying, "Clinton School Elementary staff implemented a lockdown due to an irate parent in the office. Officers responded and the parent was subsequently transported to a local hospital."

The police also said the lockdown was "currently being lifted as of the sending of this message."

The school is located on Berkshire Road.

Later in the day, police released more details.

More Details Released

They said police responded to the school around 9:02 a.m. "on the report of a school lockdown in progress. Maplewood Police Central Dispatch received a 911 call from school staff stating that there was a disorderly parent at the school's main office."

The police spoke with the parent, then asked the South Essex Fire Department EMS to come to provide an evaluation.

"Emergency Services transported the parent to the hospital with no further incident," police said.

The school did not receive any threats towards students or school staff, police said.

Officials lifted the lockdown, and school activities continued shortly after, they said.

In addition, Village Green posted a letter on Tuesday from the school principal that said that the parent entered the school office "acting erratically" around 9 a.m. that morning. The letter is here.

The day before, another school in North Jersey — an elementary school in Jersey City — was placed on lockdown after two parents allegedly displayed weapons during an argument at the school, police in that city said.
