Maplewood Office Building Evacuated Due to Smoke Conditions

An overheated elevator motor in the basement led to the evacuation of 2040 Millburn Avenue and the arrival of Maplewood FD.

If you were having difficulty making your way up Millburn Avenue to Springfield Avenue this morning, you can blame the elevator.

According to Maplewood Fire Department Deputy Chief Tom McNulty, an overheated elevator motor in the basement of the five-story office building created a smoke condition and forced the evacuation of the building at around 9 a.m. A few dozen office workers milled about in the parking lot checking their blackberries and cellphones while they waited for clearance to return to work. Many of the tenants in the building provide medical services.

There were no injuries reported.
