Police Make Arrest in Jacoby Street Armed Robbery

The following arrest information was supplied by the Maplewood Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Maplewood Police have arrested an Orange man and charged him in the at Jacoby Street and Schaeffer Road in Maplewood.

Maplewood police made the arrest after a pre-dawn operation was thwarted on Dec. 20. Detectives and officers from the Maplewood Police Crime Suppression Team first attempted to serve an arrest warrant on Thomas Lloyd Jones, 33, at his address in Orange, but Jones managed to elude detectives by climbing out of a third-story window and making his way to the ground where he discarded a 9-mm pistol believed to have been used in the armed robbery.

Detectives apprehended Jones several hours later while he was traveling in a car at the intersection of Page Terrace and Clark Street in South Orange operated by Gwyton Jones of Maplewood.

Jones was identified by the victim of the robbery and was subsequently charged with armed robbery, weapons possession and  weapons possession with an unlawful purpose. Gwyton Jones was charged with hindering the apprehension of a suspect, eluding police and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

On Dec. 19, the New Brunswick man told Maplewood Police he was walking along Jacoby Street at approximately 4 p.m. when another man approached him and pulled a tee-shirt up over his face and placed a handgun to his chest. The man allegedly told his victim, “Where’s it at? Give it up,” before removing $350 from the victim’s pants pockets.
