Third Break-In in Kendal/Walton Area

Police are not ruling out a connection between three recent break-ins. A composite sketch of the suspect in the second Kendal Avenue incident is forthcoming.

In today's blotter, police confirmed an e-mail that Patch had received stating that a Walton Road home had been burglarized between June 11 and 13 (see final incident report below). Lt. Jim Wavra of the Maplewood PD detective bureau is investigating all three of the recent break-ins in the Kendal Avenue/Walton Road area. Wavra said that the police are not ruling anything out at this time: The crimes may or may not be related. He did say that a composite sketch is forthcoming for the suspect in the second Kendal Avenue incident (see the June 9 report below).

June 8, 2010: Bomb Threat. On June 8, at approximately 8:10 am, officers responded to Columbia High School on a report of a bomb threat. Upon arrival, officers set up a perimeter as the school was evacuated. After officers conducted a check of the exterior of the building, the Essex County Bomb Squad, with the assistance of the Maplewood PD, conducted an interior search of the school, which proved negative. Shortly thereafter, students were allowed to re-enter the school and resume school. The Youth Aid Bureau is investigating.

June 8, 2010: Robbery. On June 8, at approximately 5:39 p.m., officers responded to Hillcrest Rd. on a report of a fight in the street. Through investigation, officers learned that an unknown male had reportedly robbed a 14-year-old juvenile by pushing him to the ground and going through his pockets in an attempt to take a cell phone from him. After a neighbor intervened, the suspect and a second male fled on Boyden Ave. The suspect is described as a black male, age 15-17, 5'7" to 5'8", thin build, wearing a white tank top, blue jeans, a black bandana, and having tattoos on his arms and chest.

June 8, 2010: Attempted Burglary. On June 8, at approximately 11:49 p.m., officers responded to a Springfield Avenue business on a report of an alarm activation. Upon arrival, Officer K. Graham observed a broken window on the east side of the building. Officers formed a perimeter and searched the building. No items were reported missing at the time.

June 9, 2010: Burglary. At approximately 1:40 in the afternoon a teenage girl from Kendal Avenue reported to the Police that an unknown white male was found on the second floor of her home.  The young woman returned home with another female friend and proceeded to the second floor of the house where they located a white male, 5'8" tall, hiding in the bathroom. Upon seeing the male, the two girls fled to a neighbor's house and called Police.  An interior inspection of the home by officers showed that the suspect had also fled the home. It appears that the subject was able to gain entry to the house through the back door.  The actor is described as a white male, 5'8" tall, 16 to 20 years of age, with medium length dark hair.  He was wearing dark colored jeans and a light colored t-shirt, black and white sneakers, and a dark colored backpack.  At the time of the report the homeowner was unsure if any items were taken from the home.  

June 11, 2010: Stolen Bicycle. On June 11, a resident of South Pierson Rd. reported that her daughter's bicycle had been stolen from the Main Library on Baker St. The bicycle, described as a black, gray, and green TREK girls bike was locked to the bike rack at 7:00 pm and discovered missing at 9:30 pm.

June 13, 2010: Graffiti. On June 13, a Boyden Avenue resident reported graffiti on the benches and a sign on the Boyden Avenue entrance to Borden Park.

June 14, 2010: Burglary. On June 14, a Walton Rd. resident reported a burglary to his residence occurring between 6/11/10 and 6/13/10. The resident reported that unknown suspect(s) entered his home and removed two paintings that had been hanging on his wall. The Detective Bureau is investigating.
