Two Weeks of Bicycle Thefts and Thefts from Auto

The following arrest information was supplied by the Maplewood Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Two weeks worth of the police blotter (instead of just one) can make it look like a crime wave has hit town.

It may not exactly be a wave, but the current blotter — prepared and sent courtesy of Sgt. Dean Naddeo — does show some summer crime trends. Chief among them: bicycle theft and theft from auto. Residents are reminded to be extra vigilant in locking cars and securing bikes and removing valuables from their cars — and also in reporting such incidents to the . They're here to help.

Without further ado, the Maplewood Police Department blotter for July 5 through July 19, 2011:

July 5, 2011: Bicycle Theft. A Hillcrest Rd. resident reported the theft of a red BMX bicycle from the backyard of his residence. The bicycle was not secured to anything.

July 6, 2011: Bicycle Theft. A Maplewood Ave. resident reported the theft of an unlocked bicycle left inside the hallway of her apartment building. The incident occurred during the daytime hours.

July 6, 2011: Bicycle Theft. A Tuscan Rd. resident reported the theft of a 26” blue TREK model 800 from the Maplewood Library bike rack during the morning hours.

July 9, 2011: Theft from Vehicle. A Concord Ave. resident reported the theft of a Magellan GPS and change from his unlocked vehicle.

July 9, 2011: Vandalism. A Lewis Drive resident reported that unknown suspects had broken the driver’s side window to his Cadillac SUV during the overnight hours. Entry was not gained to the vehicle and no items were taken.

July 9, 2011: Theft from Vehicle. On 7/9/11, unknown suspect(s) removed a Garmin Nuvi GPS and a brown leather wallet from a tractor trailer making a delivery to a Springfield Avenue business. The theft occurred between 4:30 and 5:30 a.m.

July 12, 2011: Warrant Arrest. At approximately 11:39 p.m., Officer K. Graham noticed a male sleeping on a Springfield Avenue bench and checked to see if the male needed assistance. The male began to curse and become verbally abusive. Officer Graham subsequently learned that the male, Anthony Butler, 44, of Leslie Street, Newark, was a wanted person out of Newark. Butler was arrested and transported to Newark PD.

July 12, 2011: Theft from Vehicle. A Hilton Ave. resident reported the theft of a bag from his parked, unlocked vehicle. It is unknown what the bag contained.

July 14, 2011: Bicycle Theft. A Valley Street juvenile reported the theft of a 26” blue Mongoose bicycle from the Maplewood Library bike rack during hours of 0900 to 1100 hours.

July 16, 2011. Motor Vehicle Theft. A visitor to Union Ave. reported the theft of a 2000 Dodge Intrepid vehicle from the street. The vehicle was subsequently recovered by Newark PD on 07/19/11.

July 18, 2011. Warrant Arrest. Maplewood Police officers arrested Kenneth Barno, 48, of Tiffany Place, on criminal warrants issued by Millburn.
