Vacancy Filled On South Orange-Maplewood School Board
Kamal Zubieta was selected from three final applicants. Zubieta can run again in the November election.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — On Monday night, the South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education members voted to fill a vacant seat on the nine-member board.
At their meeting on Academy Street in Maplewood, the board interviewed three candidates. Four people had submitted letters of interest and resumes by Feb. 5. The three who were considered qualified for consideration were:
- Sharon Tanenbaum Kraus
- Kamal Zubieta
- Susan Lewis Bergin
In the end, Kamal Zubieta was chosen.

Among her volunteer work, Zubieta has served as a coach for Girls on the Run.
Interviews were conducted beginning at 7 p.m. All applicants were provided the opportunity to make a brief five-minute statement, and then answer questions from the members.

After the board voted for Zubieta, she was able to take the oath.
Zubieta's name and contact information were posted on the board webpage as of Tuesday. She will serve a one-year term but can run again in the November school board election.
