Colts Neck Supervisor Charged In $200K ‘Ghost’ Payroll Theft
Peter McGlynn, 47 allegedly kept employees on payroll after they left the job. Prosecutors say he kept nearly $200K for himself.
COLTS NECK – A Colts Neck construction company supervisor is being charged with theft for retaining “ghost” employees – that is, leaving names on the payroll after workers already left the job and keeping nearly $200,000 in checks for himself, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
Peter McGlynn, 47, of Elizabeth, was charged Friday with one count of second degree theft by unlawful taking after an investigation led the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and Colts Neck Police Department found McGlynn ordered $195,082.83 in fraudulent payroll checks for employees who no longer were employed by the business.
The investigation revealed McGlynn kept four former employees' names on the payroll, including two employees he previously fired, and continued to submit their timesheets so that he could collect their checks. An investigation into McGlynn’s personal bank accounts subsequently revealed he deposited a total of $173,163.19 in cash of unknown origin.
