Colts Neck Field Hockey Team Falls to Freehold Borough
Cougars start off slow at Borough, can't come back from early deficit
Coming off a season opener in which they defeated the Manchester High School Hawks 1-0, the Colts Neck varsity field hockey team traveled to Freehold Borough on Monday for a game they hope to forget sooner rather than later.
Colts Neck, who boasts only one senior in fullback Elaina Stewart, got off to a remarkably slow start on Monday afternoon, allowing the Colonials, their B-North rival, to score four goals in the game’s first ten minutes. Freehold Borough’s onslaught continued as the Cougars found themselves on the wrong end of a 6-0 contest at halftime.
“Freehold’s a really experienced team,” said Colts Neck head coach Doug Daubert. “They brought back a lot of players. Our girls, I think, for as much as we talk about how we shouldn’t be intimidated, were intimidated. They let that affect how they play.”

Things didn’t get any easier for Colts Neck in the second half, as they allowed the Colonials to score three more goals in regulation, leaving them with the 9-0 loss in their second game of 2011.
“I talked about it with the girls (after the game): it’s only one loss,” said Daubert. “If it affects the next game, it’s more than one loss, and that’s what we’re focusing on right now. (Freehold Borough) is a top team in the state. We got off to a slow start. Their coach does a great job of getting them prepared and they know what they’re doing. I don’t know if I ever learned as much from a win as I have from a loss. Right now, we’re trying to learn.”

The Cougars hope that they can learn enough in between Monday’s loss and Wednesday afternoon when they’re visited by the Caseys of Red Bank Catholic.
“We need to correct some of the mistakes that we made as far as positioning,” said Daubert. “I think, coming out, we just need to be ready to play from the start. If we come out and do what we’ve been trying to do, I think we’ll be okay against RBC.”
