How NOT To Grocery Shop At Wegmans

After a move from North Jersey, this columnist views the sights, sounds, and tastes of Manalapan through fresh eyes.

Normally, when I go food shopping at Wegmans it's because there's nothing left in the house. I don't usually notice this problem until I'm hungry. Or when I'm hungry.

Wegmans, in addition to having groceries, also has a hot buffet filled with Chinese delicacies and a pizza station, veggie station and prepared sushi. In other words, they have stuff you can eat right then and there, and upstairs is an area where you can sit and eat.

I know in my head that you really shouldn't be shopping when you have an empty stomach. It makes you do crazy things. Signals shoot out from your belly to your hands to grab things you shouldn't be eating - stuff no human should be eating, unless it's the last thing in the world to eat (and even then you should probably think twice). You know the kind of artery clogging fat building type of stuff I'm talking about.

Me, I don't even make it too much farther past the hot buffet. I look it over, take a few deep breaths in and savor the smell. I need groceries, but I have work to do to and need to make it quick. Always there's work to be done and always this food shopping thing needs to be quick.

In the corner of my eye some plastic containers filled with raw fish stick out. As I wander over I forget about the groceries I'm supposed to buy. I forget about the common sense of buying in bulk. I figure it goes both ways though because sometimes I wander in to buy some stuff from the hot buffet and walk out with bags of groceries instead, or at least that's how I convince myself to have some sushi.

I grab a Spicy Tuna Roll so that I won't notice much difference in taste if it's been sitting around all day. Then, I grab some Guayaki Yerba Mate in a can. It's a kick in the head, just what I need now.

They take my money and I make my way upstairs. With all this extra time I have from not shopping, I plan the rest of my busy night. . .while finishing my sushi and sipping on my mate.
