Marlboro Students Honor Veterans

Marlboro schools will be participating in activities this week in honor of Veteran's Day.

The following was adapted from a Marlboro School District news release. The dates and times of events are not included because they are not open to the public.

This Friday, Nov. 11 is Veteran's Day, and Marlboro schools are commemorating the event throughout the week.

is running the Power to Learn program, which will include the Seth Dvorin Jewish War Veteran's Post 972 Honor Guard as well as performances by the school's jazz band and show choir. Mayor Jon Hornik, Superintendent Dr. David Abbott and Assemblyman Declan O'Scanlon are scheduled to speak.

The event will also feature four Marlboro veterans, including Board of Education Vice President Victoria Dean and Councilman Jeff Cantor to answer student questions.

The event will be telivised by the Cablevision Network.

will be learning about Veteran's Day in social studies classes by conducting mini-research projects and lessons.

One project involves analyzing poems by poets such as Emerson, Whitman and Randall Jarrell and discussing the poems as a class. Another project will have students assigned a veteran to research and present an oral report on.

will have classes completing short presentations about what a veteran is, and researching a branch of the military and creating a visual display.

Defino Central Elementary School will commemorate Veteran's Day with its annual event, including posting of the colors by the ROTC Color Guard. The ceremony will be led by Vice Principal and retired Lt. Col. Nicholas Camera.

will have its fifth graders participate in a sing-along including patriotics "songs from the past," as well as having all students share historical information about the holiday.

will hold two assemblies to accomodate all students, involving the school color guard, which will teach students about the American flag. Fifth grade homeroom representatives will perform skits to further teach students about Veteran's Day.

will have each grade honor the day in different ways. Some students will view information videos, and in a fourth grade class one student's brother who served in Iraq will be visiting the class.

There will also be an assembly where students will read essays and sing patriotic songs.

 

Township ceremony

The township will hold a ceremony at the Sept. 11 Memorial at the at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11.
