Robert Newell inflicted one gunshot wound to his head around 5:30 a.m. in the basement locker room of the courthouse and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to amny.com.
After 14 years with the NYPD, serious spinal and neck injuries obtained while on-duty caused him to retire on disability.

He retired from the NYPD in 2000, but worked at the courthouse as a security officer, according to JRN.com.
A member of the U.S. Marshal Service, Newell was hired by a private security firm to work at the courthouse in 2002.
