Robertsville Veterans Day Volunteer Spotlight: John DuPuis

In honor of Veterans Day, Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company highlights US Army veteran and volunteer firefighter John DuPuis.

After graduating college at 23, John DuPuis had firefighting on his mind when he enlisted in the Army as a combat medic. He joined hoping to transition his military experience into a fulfilling career with FDNY.

John served over five years, and was stationed in Vicenza, Italy, spending a considerable amount of time training throughout Germany. He finished at 28 as a combat medic specialist and by then, his career aspirations had shifted to the medical field. John returned home in November 2023 and immediately started classes at Monmouth University, pursuing a master’s degree in cellular and molecular biology.

“After I graduate, I want to go to medical school to become a traveling doctor and provide care to underserved populations,” said John.

In addition to enrolling in classes, John joined Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company to become more involved and connected with his community.

“The station is right by my house and I would drive by it all the time,” said John.

As a full-time student with a hectic schedule, John credits Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company for making volunteering manageable. Volunteers are encouraged to attend all monthly training drills, but the company recognizes that its members have other priorities and is appreciative of any amount of time spent protecting the community.

“I really enjoy the camaraderie at the firehouse, and just that sense of being a part of the community. If you have a thought or any inkling that you want to try it out, force yourself to take that next step,” said John.

No prior experience is needed to join; training and gear are provided to all volunteers for free. To express interest in volunteering or learn more, visit www.JoinRobertsvilleFire.org.
