MATAWAN, NJ — This past Monday was the filing deadline for those who seek to run in the 2023 elections in New Jersey.

In Matawan, current Mayor Joseph Altomonte filed his petition to seek re-election, along with Council President Deana Gunn and newcomer Arlan Feiles.

All three are Democrats.

They will be challenged by a Republican slate: Charlie Ross is running for mayor and Anissa Esposito is running for Council. Joe Saggese was also running for town Council, but he was dropped from the Republican ticket after he was charged with a domestic violence aggravated assault in late September 2023.

Esposito and Saggese have run for Matawan town council in the past without success. There is a perennial battle by Matawan Republicans to be elected to the town council.

Esposito previously served for nine years on the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional school board. Saggese worked for the Port of NY/NJ and was in the New Jersey National Guard.

Altomonte will be running for his third term as Mayor. Gunn will be running for her third term on the Council, and her running mate Feiles seeks his first term on the Council. All three are longtime residents of Matawan.

For those who don't know Feiles, he is a volunteer t-ball coach for the Matawan Sharks and a member and musical volunteer for Temple Beth Miriam in Long Branch.

The election will be Nov. 7.
