Chester ShopRite Expanding, Adding Curbside Grocery Pick-Up

Supermarket hopes to have renovations complete this year, offer online ordering with drive up service and larger organic foods selection.

Chester ShopRite on Route 206 is looking to improve on the “super” in supermarket.

At a July 11 meeting of the Chester Borough zoning and planning board, the food store’s application to add nearly 1,300 square-feet of space for interior and exterior alterations was approved, and the changes are going to be dramatic for shoppers.

According to Kerry Brown, the construction official in the borough, the application includes a 1,280 square-foot addition in the rear of the building to accommodate the store’s upcoming shop-from-home capabilities, where consumers will be able to make their order online and have the food delivered directly to their vehicle.

Shoppers will head down the side street that runs behind the mall – on the side where Starbucks and Yophoric are located – and find themselves in a small parking lot in the rear of the store. From there, store employees will deliver the pre-ordered food to customers’ vehicles.

On the inside of the building, ShopRite is planning on growing its organic produce selection and adding a fresh fish market, Brown said.

Representatives from Village Supermarkets, ShopRite’s parent company, did not immediately return calls for comment.

“It sounds like they want to start (construction) as soon as possible,” Brown said. “And I believe they’re hoping to have everything done by the holidays.”

Five of Morris County’s nine ShopRite stores currently offer the drive-in delivery system.
