Today students of Nut Swamp Elementary School celebrated Earth Day by planting the school’s first vegetable garden.
The event was held by the school PTA's Wellness Committee, lead by parent and Registered Dietitian, Donna Castellano, with the help of parent Tiffany McCann. They have recently been promoting school-wide activities aimed at providing nutrition education to the students.
According to Mrs. Castellano, “ Earth Day was the perfect opportunity to teach our students that what is good for their body is also good for the planet. These young children are the leaders of tomorrow. We must teach them how to care for themselves and the environment so that future generations can live healthier than we do today. Currently, we live in one of the unhealthiest nations in the world, largely because we consume so much processed food. Many children are not aware of how real food is produced, how it’s grown or how it affects their body. In addition, the garden can be used for teaching science and math in a way that is unique and engaging. Our hope is that we will influence not just our school community, but many others to strive for a healthier lifestyle.”
