On May 23, the governor’s office announced changes to the Sandy Homeowners and Renter Assistance Program, including $47.1 million in additional funding to sustain the program and a deadline for new applications.
There is now a deadline for new applications — June 30 in Atlantic, Bergen, Hudson, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Union counties and May 30 in the fourteen counties with the lowest participation.
- If you have an appointment with an agency to apply for SHRAP, but that appointment is after the application deadline: Your appointment will still be honored and you will still be eligible to SHRAP funds.
- If you have not yet made an appointment but still wish to apply for SHRAP: You can go to a SHRAP center in any of the counties distributing funds to apply, even if you do not live in that county. Some of the less-affected counties have much shorter wait times for appointments. However, for every re-certification appointment you would have to go back to the same office you applied at. If you cannot travel, please call your local SHRAP agency to see if an appointment can be made in time to receive funds.
If you’re already receiving SHRAP assistance, nothing should change. The centers should stay open even after application deadlines close to process recipients’ monthly re-certifications.
