Driver In Serious Middletown Accident Was Intoxicated: Police

The pedestrian who was struck was airlifted to the hospital, where she remains.

MIDDLETOWN, NJ-- The driver in a serious car crash that left a woman hospitalized last week was intoxicated, Middletown police said.

Robert L. Nankervis, 61, of Atlantic Highlands, was arrested for driving while intoxicated after striking Jennifer Smith, 49, of Belford.

The crash occurred at Highway 36 and Seventh Street at 9:10 PM Thursday night in the eastbound lane. Smith was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center by the State Police, where she remains.

Nankervis was processed and released on a summons complaint. The crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Middletown Twp. Police Traffic Safety Unit at (732) 615-2100.
