Gas Line Catches Fire In Middletown

Breaking: Construction crews accidentally struck a gas line Friday morning in the area of New Monmouth Road. The line caught fire.

MIDDLETOWN, NJ — Construction crews accidentally struck a gas line Friday morning in the area of New Monmouth Road near Rt. 35, and the gas line briefly caught fire, Middletown police and firefighters report.

The accident occurred at approximately 10:28 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15. Construction crews were actually in the area working to replace the gas line. While working, they accidentally struck the one-inch, low-pressure line and it caught fire, said Dennis Fowler, a spokesman for the Middletown Fire Department. The gas main briefly caught fire, but the fire did not spread and fire crews were able to put it out in minutes, he said.

There were no injuries reported.

Units from the Middletown Twp. Fire Department, including Middletown #1 Fire Company, Belford Engine Fire Company, and Old Village Fire Company, as well as Fairview First Aid Squad responded.
