The former police officer, 26, admitted he attempted to have sex with a woman while she was unconscious and incapable of consent.

KEANSBURG, NJ — A former member of the Keansburg Police Department has now been sentenced to four years in state prison after he admitted to committing a sex crime, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond Santiago announced Tuesday.

Nicholas Thompson, 26, will also be required to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law and permanently forfeit all future public employment in New Jersey.

He was sentenced Friday.

As Patch previously reported, the crime took place inside a private home in January 2021, when the victim, an adult woman, was unconscious and incapable of consent. Thompson was a special law enforcement officer Type II with Keansburg Police at the time of the crime.

However, he was sworn in as a patrolman with Keansburg PD last year.

He was arrested and charged in October of 2021, after he had already been promoted to a full-time police officer.

This past May, he pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted aggravated sex assault, after consultation with the female victim. Thompson admitted that he attempted to have sex with the woman while she was unconscious and incapable of consent. This incident occurred at a private residence, while Thompson was off-duty.

“Sworn members of law enforcement are rightfully held to a higher standard of conduct, on the job and off,” Prosecutor Santiago said Tuesday. “When they fall so short of that standard that their conduct becomes criminal, we then have a solemn obligation and responsibility to step in and ensure that they are held fully accountable.”

Thompson was represented by well-known Jersey Shore criminal defense attorney Mitchell Ansell.

He must serve a minimum of 85 percent of the four-year prison sentence.
