Meet the Board of Education Candidates Night

MTFOdL's hosts Candidates Forum with a focus on Special Education Issues: Nov. 1st at High School North Library 7 pm

Middletown Township Friends of diverse Learners (MTFOdL) is hosting a Meet the Board of Education Candidates Night, Thursday November 1st at 7:00 p.m. at the High School North Library (63 Tindall Road, Middletown, NJ 07748). Community members are encouraged to meet the candidates and ask questions about general and special education issues. Three of nine seats on the school board are up for general election on November 6th. The candidates attending the Meet the Candidate Night include current board member and president Joan Minnuies, who has filed for re-election, as well as, Thomas Giaimo, David Merces, and Deborah Wright.

We hope to learn about candidates’ vision and ideas for special education as well as general education. Students who receive special education services comprise almost one fifth of the student population and have a large range of needs across many settings. Special Education is not just a specific classroom anymore, as some may think. In fact, the great majority of Middletown’s students with disabilities are in general education classrooms.

MTFOdL is a district-wide parent organization that works with the community and school district administrators to share information and support the education of students with special needs. MTFOdL was established in 2008 to promote inclusion and acceptance of students with special needs and learning difficulties and fulfills the New Jersey Department of Education’s state mandate for a parent advisory group in the Middletown district. The organization serves as a resource to parents, and collaborates with district administrators to positively affect policies, practices, and programs for students with disabilities. For the 2018-19 school year, MTFOdL meetings for parents of students, who have special needs, are usually the last Tuesday of the month, with a few exceptions as indicated: Nov. 27th, Thursday Dec. 13th, Thursday Jan. 31st, Feb. 26th, March 26th, April 30th, and May 28th. Meetings are from 7:00 to 8:45 p.m. at the Middletown Public Library, 55 New Monmouth Road Middletown, NJ 07748.
