Middletown Historical Discusses Sandy Hook Proving Ground May 24

The Middletown Historical Society continues its speaker series with "Thunder on the Beach: Sandy Hook Proving Ground" at 7 p.m. on May 24.

MIDDLETOWN, NJ — The Middletown Township Historical Society continues its speaker series with "Thunder on the Beach: Sandy Hook Proving Ground" at 7 p.m. on May 24.

Founded in 1874, the Sandy Hook Proving Ground was the U.S. Army's first official testing site, where the Army tested bombs, land mines and ammunition.

Located at Middletown's Sandy Hook, it operated until 1919. The proving ground's buildings, testing and legacy will be discussed.

Mary Rasa is the speaker. Rasa is a speaker/historian who worked as a museum curator and park ranger for the National Park Service for 16 years. She holds a BA in historic preservation and a master's degree in library science. She has conducted more than a thousand similar programs for a variety of audiences.
