Middletown Launches Survey: Turning Port Monmouth Into Rec Center

Here's a survey from Middletown schools that asks residents what they want to see at a potential Port Monmouth Rec Center:

MIDDLETOWN, NJ — Remember back in mid-January when the school district/Township announced they want to turn Port Monmouth school into a youth sports rec center?

Well, now the Middletown school district launched a survey that asks residents what they want to see at the rec center, or how they best think the empty Port Monmouth building should be used.

Here is the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r... MPS just unveiled it this week on their website and you have until Feb. 25 to fill it out.

This is a plan backed by both Middletown Township and the school district: The plan is to convert the building into a Port Monmouth rec center that would be open to all Middletown children, teens and adults, sort of like a town gym.

It remains unknown if there will be a fee, or how much.

Middletown hired this outside company, Pinnacle Indoor Sports, to do an economic feasibility study on the rec center. This means they have to figure out if it's cost effective to turn Port Monmouth into a rec center.

Middletown Township — not the district — is paying Pinnacle $32,500 to do the feasibility study.

BOE president Frank Capone said he's gotten "great feedback" from the community so far. He cautioned the idea was still "in its infancy. But I'm very excited about it. I hope it does pan out."

It remains unclear how the Port Monmouth school building — two years ago deemed unsafe to house students as one of the reasons for why the board closed it — would now be safe enough to be a rec center for indoor sports. Prior: Middletown May Turn Port Monmouth School Into Rec Center (Jan. 20)
