Middletown Sees 6 Percent Increase In State Aid For '25-26 School Year

The Middletown school district —​ usually a victim of yearly state aid reductions from Trenton —​ actually saw an increase for next year.

MIDDLETOWN, NJ — The Middletown school district — usually a victim of yearly reductions in state aid from the NJ Department of Education — actually saw an increase in state aid this year.

State aid figures for New Jersey school districts were announced last week, as part of Gov. Phil Murphy's budget. Middletown schools will receive $14.8 million in state aid, a six percent or $839,000 increase from the 2024-'25 school year. Last year, Middletown received $13.9 million from the state.

The money will be used for the upcoming 2025-'26 school year. The Middletown school district is preparing its budget now.

To make it more equitable as to how state aid is determined, the state put a three-percent cap on how much a district could lose, and a six-percent cap on how much more aid it could get, compared to 2024.

This is the final budget Murphy will prepare in his time as New Jersey governor. There is an election for a new governor in November.
