Middletown Township Public Library celebrates centennial

Middletown Township Public Library began community service in 1921

One hundred years ago today, June 4, 1921, the Middletown Township Public Library began serving a then-population of 6,000 residents. Librarian Dorothy Norton drove a Model A Ford, the first Library on Wheels in New Jersey, announcing her arrival by ringing a bell.

Earlier this week, the Library was honored with proclamations commemorating this historic event. State Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger presented the State Citation, County Commissioner Lillian G. Burry presented the Monmouth County proclamation, and Mayor Tony Perry presented the Middletown Township proclamation at a special ceremony on June 2nd.

During that event, the contents of the 1971 time capsule were removed and exhibited. During the year, items will be placed in a new time capsule to be opened in 50 years. The public is invited to make suggestions as to its content.

A special video documenting the Library’s one hundred year history was shown as a component of the celebration. A new Nature Walk display of the children’s book Library Lion was also created for public viewing.

Additional commemorative events will be announced during the year.
