Middletown Troop 246 Hosts Eagle Court of Honor

Middletown Resident, St. John Vianney High School Sophomore Kyle Pevonis earns Eagle, highest rank in Boy Scouts.

Middletown Boy Scout Troop 246 recently hosted an Eagle Court of Honor for Middletown resident and St. John Vianney High School Sophomore Kyle Pevonis for completing more than 63 merit badges including the 21 merit badge requirements to become an Eagle Scout, the highest rank a young man can earn from the Boy Scouts of America.

Kyle’s Eagle Project to rebuild the Poricy Park Kiosk required him to design the kiosk components, raise funds to pay for materials and galvanize his fellow scouts to help build, sand, stain and erect the structure, which included a new roof and a new wood kiosk display with glass.

“Although Poricy Park had several wish list projects, I chose the kiosk because it is the first introduction to the park and it was really in bad shape – from moss growing on the roof to heavy wood damage from carpenter bees,” says Kyle, who worked for a year to complete the project. While rebuilding the display, he was also able to increase the size of the display area to allow for additional visitor information. “Weather conditions made it unpredictable to complete all the building pieces on-site so I had to do some in our garage and have the guys help on weekends when we had time to prime, sand and stain the pieces,” notes Kyle, who enlisted the help of his fellow scouts to complete the project.

He also said his grandparents Joyce and Howard Mills pitched in with some finishing touches including the plaque on the kiosk.

In addition to Boy Scouts, Kyle taught himself to play electric guitar, enjoys the great outdoors and camping. This spring he is looking forward to playing baseball at St. John Vianney and applying for summer lifeguard positions to share the swimming and lifesaving skills he earned as a scout. Boys interested in joining Boy Scouts can attend Troop 246 meetings at Nutswamp School, 925 Nutswamp Road, held Tuesdays from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. or, for more information, contact: Scoutmaster Scott Pevonis, sgtpevo@gmail.com.
