Oak Hill Academy Scores High in World

The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) provides reliable and timely data on the mathematics and science achievement of US students compared to that of students in other countries.  The math test is given internationally every four years with data now available for the 2011 testing.  In this most recent administration, more than 60 countries including the United States participated. In May of this year, Joseph Pacelli, Headmaster at Oak Hill Academy in Lincroft, thought it would be of interest to see how the school’s eighth grade level math students would fair against the approximate 500,000 students who took the 2011 test across the world. The exam was taken and the results were very impressive.  “We scored just below Singapore with a 81.3 average to our 78.4. We were just ahead of Chinese Taipei (76.5) and Japan (75.5)  The United States average was 69.” states Pacelli.

Oak Hill had 53 students participate with 29 scoring 80% or better.  Three students, Harry Jain (Red Bank), Thomas Wang (Marlboro) and Michael Zhang (Middletown) all achieved a perfect score. “The TIMSS testing is an excellent measure of how students compare to other children internationally.  The test is demanding and asks students to solve problems which are thought provoking using various methods of mathematical reasoning” concludes Pacelli.
