Presentation: Trees in Sacred Spaces-9/11 Memorial Plaza
Free public presentation at Rumson Fair Haven High School on May 6 at 6:30pm.
Have you ever visited a memorial and felt the calming effects of trees? Trees are incorporated in the design of public spaces not only for their beauty and shade they provide, but for the relaxation and peaceful reflection they engender.
The 9/11 Memorial Plaza in New York City is surrounded by 412 Swamp white oaks, which create a comforting greenscape and a feeling of tranquility in an otherwise bustling, urban environment. These special trees were selected and cultivated with extreme care for five years specifically for this sacred space. Bartlett Tree Experts was selected for this important and difficult task. The 9/11 Memorial oaks have been called the most intensively cared for trees in the world.
Dr. Neil Hendrickson from Bartlett Tree Experts will share the fascinating and deeply moving story of how and why these trees were selected, and how they were painstakingly cultivated to enhance the Memorial. Provided with near daily care in a Millstone Township nursery for five years, it is a story with deep roots in Monmouth County.
